My husband’s birthday is just a few days away and since it is a BIG birthday, I am planning a BIG Birthday Bash using the movie, “BIG” for inspiration. The idea for the theme came to me as I was observing this sophisticated, handsome, fun fellow and realized that buried inside, not so very deeply, is an adorable 12 year old boy.
If you aren’t familiar with the Tom Hanks movie, “BIG”, here is a little excerpt from the back of the movie jacket.
All a 12-year-old Josh Baskin (Hanks) wants is to be big. But when his wish is granted beyond his wildest dreams, Josh finds a new face in the mirror…his own, at age 30. Now, aided only by his boisterous best friend, he’ll have to keep the secret of his true age as he tries to fill his own oversized shoes. But as his innocent charms help him rise to the top of the adult world, Josh will face the biggest decision of his life – return to his own age or remain big forever.
Fun and Games
For one magical evening, David and all of his friends will return to their own age to play and celebrate his BIG birthday. This carnival atmosphere will be filled with fun and games –ping pong, remote control bumper car competitions, hula hoops, yo-yos, silly string, magic eight balls to forecast the future and a giant keyboard placed on the floor to play”Happy Birthday”, “Chop Sticks”, or whatever brilliant masterpieces come to mind.
Get Ready...
Get Set...
GO!
How did it go?
Guests were greeted at the door with tickets for door prizes and a copy of a rhyme that they would get to recite later in the evening. Freshly popped popcorn and refreshing beverages were at the ready as they gathered, played games and listened to fantastic music provided by Carey Brazil.
Finally, the DAWGS were hot off the grill and ready for the taking. Along with the usual suspects, (ketchup, mustard, relish, kraut, pickles, peppers, onions, etc.), there was chili, nacho cheese, chips and hot and crunchy tater tots. OH! and of course, pickled baby corn on the cob.
The Space Goes.....
After a satisfying meal, it was time for a friendly competition between the boys and the girls. There was a practice run, (which the girls performed in spectacular fashion and the boys– not so much), followed by the BIG contest……
…..Somehow, the girls lost their advantage and the boys pulled it all together beautifully. It was decided to call it a draw.
On Top of the World
Just before putting down the mic, I shared a little about David’s and my story. Since our first date, exactly 10 years ago to the day, David has put me on top of the world….so I sang the song in tribute to him.
At the conclusion of the celebration, a beautiful array of themed treats, created by Just American Desserts, were presented along with party favors of bubble gum and marbles.
Now the decision was to be made, would David and his friends return to their own age or remain BIG forever?
CHEERS, THANK YOU AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAVID!
